Luthers Hochzeit

a.k.a. Luther's Marriage.

This weekend is the biggest weekend in Wittenberg - the annual celebration and re-enactment of Martin Luther's marriage to ex-nun Katharina von Bora.

Here is some information from the English language Luthers Hochzeit:

"Wittenberg, cradle of the Reformation, hosted within its walls such famous personalities as the “painter of the Reformation“ Lucas Cranach the Elder, the „Teacher of Germany“ Philipp Melanchthon and last but not least Dr. Martin Luther, who preluded the Reformation in 1517 by publishing his 95 theses against the misuse of the indulgence trade.

"Eight years later, on June 13th 1525, the former monk Martin Luther married the former nun Katharina of Bora who had escaped from a convent.

"This event has been the annual occasion since 1994 for the big town festival.

"Throughout the whole historical centre of Wittenberg some 100.000 visitors enjoy on three days a diverse and interesting program:

• The castle courtyard with the castle church, where Luther is said to have fixed his 95 theses, hosts the medieval market of bands- and craftsmen, where in observing 16th century tradition, goods, foods, drinks and craftsmanship are being presented.

• The great meadow in front of the castle gets transformed into renaissance time by diverse medieval show and craftsmen groups.

• In the streets of the historical centre visitors are being waited for by a diverse exhibition of commerce and art, culinary specialities and entertainment.

• At the Cranach backyard the “house and estate every day life” of Lucas Cranach is brought to life.

• In front of the town church, the preaching church of Martin Luther, Wittenberg clubs and associations pitch their medieval tents and invite for music, dance and solid food.

• On the market square takes place the opening ceremony as well as great entertainment programs.

"Undoubtedly, the highlight of the festival is marked on Saturday by the „Great historical parade for Luther´s marriage”. More than 900 participants, among them countless musicians and jugglers, shape this parade.

"Visitors are invited to enjoy on this weekend more than 60 single events at the original places of Wittenberg history – that is the original settings of the Reformation – embedded in one of the most beautiful town festivals of Germany. "

And it truly is - it's one of the top ten festivals in the country! I was lucky enough to be in Wittenberg for it when I was here as a student, and I had a great time. This year, Pamela will be here for the first time, while Bridget will experience it for the third (!) time.

The parade will also pass right by my apartment, so I should be able to get some fun pictures - either by hanging out of the windows or standing on the street. ;)
