Gooooooooooooooooooo GERMANY!!

I watched the Germany-Argentina quarterfinal match of the World Cup today. Talk about exciting! Tied 1-1 after 90 minutes, so they went into 2 15-minute overtime periods. STILL tied 1-1, so they went into penalty kicks. Germany won, 4 kicks to 2, so they're on to the semifinals and will play the winner of Italy-Ukraine (I think -- it's the Italian match for sure).

I for one am hoping for a Germany-Brazil final. How awesome would that be??

We got to Erfurt just in time to see the end of that game on the hotel big screen - the overtimes and 11-meter shots.

And then the celebrating. In the four years I lived in Germany, I didn't see a single German flag... before this World Cup season. And now they are decorating cars, balconies, windows, heads (there's a lovely German-flag-mohawk wig of which I've seen a few variations) and bodies.

After they won the quarterfinal, everyone and their dog was decorated and out on the street with whistles and airhorns and beer and they were celebrating together. Strangers gave each other high-fives in the streets; old men waved merrily at young hooligans; we felt out of place because we weren't wearing black, gold and red.

It was surreal.
