'Tis the season!

One of our local radio stations has started playing non-stop Christmas music. Actually, that's not true. This weekend they had the "preview weekend" of Christmas carols, but tomorrow it's back to your work-day favorites of yesterday and today. Which means, of course, adult contemporary tunes.

But at the store today, the other associate on duty wondered if she could change the radio to Christmas music. I didn't care, because I like Christmas music and am generally not opposed to listening to it. When the manager came out of the back room, however, it was a different story. She changed it back because "we have to listen to Christmas music from the day after Thanksgiving until Christmas, and it gets old pretty quickly." Alright, I guess that's how it's got to be.

But my question is this: how is listening to holiday tunes for 4 weeks any different from listening to the same five songs on the radio day in and day out for an indeterminate amount of time?

Really, I'd rather listen to a million different versions of "Deck the Halls" or "Jingle Bells" than have to listen to Hinder (see post from earlier this week) or the theme from The Breakfast Club or St Elmo's Fire twice a shift on the adult contemporary station. Even the oldies station plays the same songs over and over!

So, readers, my questions are as follows: what's YOUR favorite holiday tune? What quirky carol can you recommend to me for a totally random Christmas mix cd that I can take to the store? What's a really fantastic compilation of Christmas songs that won't drive us batty? (Fans of Mariah Carey's Christmas CD need not answer. But fans of Wham!'s "Last Christmas" can totally submit.)

Yeah, we listened to oldies at Subway. Did you ever notice how *short* those songs are? Are there are by definition only a finite, predetermined number of them, and so you hear the same ones over and over and over and over and over ad infinitum.

Fleece post for you! :-)

My all time absolute favorite Christmas carol is "Carol of the Bells," but I also really dig "I Want A Hippopatamus For Christmas" by Wayne Newton (pre-puberty). It's great, but doesn't get as much air time on the 24 hour Christmas stations as the Mariah Carey stuff.
Any time is a great time for Christmas music, but I don't really let myself get excited until after Thanksgiving. It's not the merry season for me until I see Santa at the end of the Macy's parade.
